We often hear our politicians complaining of ‘voter apathy’ and bemoaning the fact that voters do not turn out on election nights to exercise their franchise. Of course politicians know this is simply not true – voters in many cases are apathetic to them not politics in general.
As all our politicians have moved closer together and provide very little choice between them many voters see no point in trying to decide who is the least worst option – especially as the recipient claims they have a mandate, when the very best they can say is that they were slightly less hated than the other man!
What we need is compulsory voting – but only when there is an option on the ballot paper that says ‘None of the above‘
When the ‘None of the above‘ forms the majority perhaps our politicians will appreciate that it is the system that is at fault – not the voters.
